Dorney Lake is an impressive venue, and our two scullers (Kyran and Kester, both in MJ14 1x - there is no MJ12 event for Kester!) were certainly not over-awed. Thanks to Stephen and Andrea they were able to get an outing on the Friday afternoon as they had never boated on a purpose-built multi-lane course before. Not only were the buoys a novelty, the wind was also a feature they had not had to contend with recently.
We were back at 7.20am for another short outing, and both coped better with the wind and lanes - everything was in place, and we had the lake to ourselves!
Kyran was in the first semi-final and he set off for the cut through with a calm determination on his face. All of the opponents were an unknown challenge, and with the marshalls having to work hard in the stiff wind, Kyran got of to a poor start. He settled very quickly and rowed his own race, and by 250 metres had got past one sculler and
had closed down the sculler in third place. It was an impressive push, and by 500 metres Kyran was past and had clear water. From there to the finish he maintained his concentration and sculled with drive and poise to 3rd to qualify for the final.
Four minutes later Kester followed him down in the second semi. Despite the age and size differences Kester was never behind, and settled into a really strong row. He maintained his technique and commitment, sculling away from Coalporters A and by 400 metres he was well clear of fourth place. Kester kept his focus and also qualified comfortably for the final. It was an excellent race for anyone, let alone someone giving away two years and unknown experience on a big course.
The final was eagerly awaited. They left the pontoon together and went down the warm-up lane. Concentration was not as good as earlier - not helped by a side wind that was now stronger than previously, or a WJ16 2x capsizing. They went through to the course and were kept waiting for two late arrivals, managing the conditions well - until the critical moment when Kyran was again at the back and momentarily not ready. Both boys sculled very well from the beginning; Kester was able to maintain his own race pace, and again sculled with a smooth, strong technique. He never lost concentration, and appeared very comfortable with the tricky cross-wind. He sculled cleanly and strongly, and showed again what a capable and competitive sculler he is. Kyran set off for fourth place and had little difficulty in passing the Plymouth sculler who had beaten him twice earlier in the season. Next was the winner of Kester’s semi-final. For two thirds of the race Kyran was alongside, making gains and building momentum; then an encounter with the buoys 150 metres from the finish interrupted his challenge and he had to settle for fourth place.
It was a day that exceeded all our expectations. Fourth and sixth at the South Coast Championships. The boys were superb - composed and co-operative throughout; they handled the situation and sculled to the best of their ability in three very intense, competitive races; the adults all mucked in, helped out and gave great support. We got all our competitors into their final, and we able to hold our heads high at the awards presentation - or were we just trying to get a glimpse of Sir Steve Redgrave? [TH]
Wimbleball juniors compete at
There was a great atmosphere throughout the day - the parents and children were fantastic. They all listened, helped out, parents were in the right place etc etc. The weather was kind and the venue close to Exeter city centre is great for spectating and supporters.
In MJ14 Single Sculls , Kyran was beaten in his heat by the
For the MJ12 1x it was a straight final for James and Kester. They handled the new environment with an air of
calmness; they looked very impressive and coped with the marshalling etc and a stiff headwind. Both scullers showed they know how to scull and race. Kester won - but James certainly narrowed the gap since their last race in June.
Amy raced WNov 1x again, and was against the same girl as at Totnes (WEARA allow you to win 3 novices before you move up). Amy also handled the new location very well, and sculled with panache. The race got off to a great start and Amy led away from the marshalling area; the headwind favoured the opposition and again Amy has made a lot of progress since the last race and the margin at the line was significantly less.
It was a good day - one win, everyone more competitive than last time and all the racers did themselves proud under race pressures. [TH]
Amy & Kyran compete at : Totnes Regatta 2011 [top]
I expect that most of you will have heard by now but Amy and Kyran both competed creditably at Totnes Regatta yesterday. Amy dead heated for second place in the Ladies Novice 1x with Kim Tapper from Exmouth. Amy's sculling was very smooth, clean, neat and powerful but there came a time in the second half of the race when she tired and could not sustain her lead over Kim. However she did show great spirit in not letting Kim beat her.
Kyran also sculled well and came a close second in a heat of the Mens J14 1x. He beat the third placed sculler by a considerable margin and was only a length or so behind the heat winner (who later came second in the final). Kyran sculled powerfully and neatly and if he had concentrated on rowing his own boat then he may have won his heat. After that who knows what would have happened. [SW]
